The fact that none of these bands could open for Metallica or the Exploited without suffering abuse merely proves how thoroughly the underground’s absorbed certain influences, resulting in music that isn’t punk-metal but a third sound distinct from either.
Some of these influences are apparent visually; blatant posing on stage is acceptable again. I’ve seen all but one of these bands live at least once and a few of the musicians, along with many of their fans, could pass for members of Ratt. Some people find this distracting, as it seems to have little to do with the style of their music. I personally don’t mind boys in makeup. If bands today can get by with rifling rock history for any cheap thrill they can find, I say that’s great, because it serves to further break down divisions and discourage snobbery and purism, the worst enemies of rock ‘n’ roll.

Estoy disfrutando mucho Everybody loves our town, an oral history of Grunge de Mark Yarm, un librito sobre la escena musical de Seattle desde el punk de los años 70 hasta el boom global de los primeros años 90 del siglo pasado.
Más allá del contenido, que me apasiona, me está gustando mucho el tono de la narración, transmite constantemente la frescura de un documental. En cierto sentido engaña porque aparenta muchísimo menos trabajo del que realmente hay tras cientos de entrevistas y organización de la información, que es monumental.
En ese pasaje, Dawn Anderson sugiriendo, antes que nadie más lo hiciera, que esos grupos musicales tenían un tercer sonido que aún no tenía nombre pero no era ni metal ni punk, y sí una mezcla de elementos de ambos. El término grunge aún no se había acuñado para etiquetarlo.
